Facing an Endless Barrage, Ukraine’s Air Defenses Are WitheringThis is what a year of Russian missile strikes on Ukraine looks like. Ukrainian air defenses used to intercept most missiles, but in recent months, more and more have made it through. Ukraine has made increasingly desperate pleas for more air defenses from its Western allies. But it could be months before enough weapons arrive to significantly bolster Ukrainian air defenses. Ukrainian air defenses downed the first seven — but had no choice but to let the next four pass, he said.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden said he will debate former President Donald Trump ahead of this year’s election, the clearest declaration yet of his willingness to face-off with his Republican rival before voters cast ballots in November. I don’t know when,” Biden said when asked by interviewer Howard Stern whether he planned to debate his predecessor. “I’m happy to debate him.”It’s the first time Biden has said explicitly he would debate Trump in this election cycle. Some of Biden’s aides have questioned whether Trump would abide by established rules in any potential debate, and before Friday his campaign hadn’t set out any specific debate plan. Biden had responded to Trump’s calls for earlier debates in February, telling reporters: “If I were him, I’d want him to debate me, too.

CNN —A Russian missile strike killed and injured more than 70 people in the city of Chernihiv in northern Ukraine – an attack that could have been prevented if Ukraine was provided with better air defenses, President Volodomyr Zelensky said. At least 14 people were killed in the strike and 61 others were injured, including two children, Ukraine’s emergency services said. Russia’s strike comes after Zelensky has for months warned that Ukraine lacks the air defenses necessary to protect its skies. “This would not have happened if Ukraine had received a sufficient number of air defense systems and if the world’s determination to counter Russian terror had been sufficient,” Zelensky said. There must be equally sufficient determination from our partners and, as a result, sufficient support.”More than 70 people were killed and injured in the Russian strike.

CNN —A lack of air defenses meant Ukraine was powerless to prevent a Russian airstrike last week that destroyed the biggest power plant in Kyiv region, President Volodomyr Zelensky said. Russia fired 11 missiles towards the Trypilska power plant, Zelensky said. We ran out of all missiles,” Zelensky told PBS NewsHour in an interview that aired Monday. Zelensky questioned why Israel has enjoyed such comprehensive support from NATO members despite not being a member of the alliance. CNN —A dozen of the nation’s biggest news organizations posted an open letter Sunday, urging President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump to participate in televised debates ahead of the 2024 election. Biden has not publicly committed to debating Trump, although he has not ruled it out. Immediately after the polls closed on Saturday night, CNN projected that the former South Carolina governor had come up short to Trump. During the fourth quarter of 2023, Haley out-raised Trump, $24 million to $19 million. In January 2024, as the rest of the GOP field winnowed, Haley’s fundraising again bested Trump’s, $9.8 million to $8.8 million. To her credit, Haley has taken dead aim at both Trump and Putin, accusing the former of emboldening the latter. During the 2016 South Carolina primary, there were still six serious candidates in the GOP race.

Panetta told CNN the weapon could disable US satellites. Multiple media reports, citing US officials, said the threat was Russia developing a nuclear weapon to be deployed against satellites. Read previewNetflix's "Raël: The Alien Prophet" is perhaps one of its most gripping docuseries yet. The show delves into the world of a controversial French cult known as the Raëlian Movement, which claimed that it created the world's first human clone in the early 2000s. The Raëlian movement was convinced that cloning humans would lead to immortality. In "Raël: The Alien Prophet," Boisselier maintains that Eve is doing well, although she has little contact with her. But with Mr. Trump’s intervention persuading congressional Republicans to abandon the border deal that they themselves had demanded, Mr. Biden finally has an opportunity to shift from defense to offense. “Joe Biden blamed President Trump for the border crisis that Biden himself created,” said Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the former president. Mr. Trump made clear that he saw the deal not as a solution but a threat to his bid to reclaim his office. I think of that encounter from time to time as I ponder the unspeakable violence of the war raging in the Middle East. I’m also heartbroken to witness the profound pain of my Jewish and Muslim friends and their growing fears for their own safety. Intolerance was already on the rise but the events of the past two months have sent it into overdrive. Indirectly, therefore, public opinion in the US seems likely to have some potential impact on the Israeli government’s actions. CNN —Israel could not have asked for a better friend than President Joe Biden. As global anger mounted at the thousands of civilian deaths in Gaza during Israel’s counter-attack against Hamas, Biden has been unequivocal on the Jewish state’s right to hit back. He pushed back at suggestions by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel would somehow control Gaza after the war. Senior administration officials have repeatedly denied that any part of Biden’s calculations on Israel are rooted in domestic politics. Protests have rocked university campuses, where there’s been an outbreak of anti-Israel feeling that has sometimes crossed into blatant antisemitism.

The vast majority of Americans remain sympathetic to Israel according to recent polling. A separate poll released by CNN found 71% of respondents say they feel deep sympathy for the Israeli people over the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas, with nearly all expressing at least some sympathy for them. A broad majority also feel at least some sympathy for the Palestinian people, CNN said. The Biden administration has been strongly supportive of Israel with the president expressing "unwavering support" in recent days. Russia keeps jamming Ukraine's drones and it's making their operators get closer to danger. That's forced Ukraine to shuffle its drone operators, such as first-person-view (FPV) pilots, closer to avoid jamming and counter Russia's own drone operators. In the early months after Russia's full-scale invasion, drone operators could pilot miles from the front, which kept them safer from conflict. Drone operators, who have received extensive training, are indispensable for their side — and high-value targets for enemies. Some of these relatively cheaper drones can have an outsized impact, with some FPV drones taking out high-cost, high-value targets such as Russian T-90 tanks.

The poll found voters divided exactly in half over whether they intended to vote for Democrats or Republicans in the next Congressional election. While surveys now usually show Biden leading Trump, the president’s margin rarely exceeds his four-point margin of victory from 2020. Instead, the pandemic quickly evolved into just another front in the preexisting culture war lines of division between the parties. Yet Biden, as noted above, still maintained his 2020 lead over Trump in these seats of four percentage points. Surveys have found widespread concern among voters that Biden is too old to effectively handle the presidency.

The DeSantis plan, rolled out at a press conference at the Texas border Monday, lays out steps that should satisfy most Republican border hawks. His immigration plan showcases a candidate interested in effective policymaking beyond pure sloganeering, even if some major questions surround a few key details. The former President noted the similarities — “His plan is my plan,” Trump told Semafor and ABC News on Tuesday. Then, there are the ideas in DeSantis’ plan that have a harder time standing up to scrutiny. Similarly, cutting federal funding to non-governmental organizations that provide aid to those who cross the southern border would be less effective than it sounds.

The roar of outrage from Republican leaders to that indictment restored Trump’s grip on the party after frustration over his role in the GOP’s disappointing 2022 midterm elections had loosened it. Repeating the pattern from other moments of maximum threat to Trump, the GOP response has been marked by a pronounced communications imbalance. (The poll was conducted after Trump’s indictment in Manhattan but before the recent federal charges.) At another point Trump insisted, “These criminals cannot be rewarded” – presumably by frightening Republican voters away from nominating him.
